Artist Statement

The MILL project has been of particular interest to me as it has drawn together the spheres of art, architecture and urban design.

I have considered it my role to record the architecture and the character of the built fabric of the Mill. The palette of brick, stone and iron provide a range of colours, textures and forms that are irresistible to this artist. The solidity of the structure and the decorative form of the roof trusses contrast with many of today’s buildings. However, the Mill is a functional building, understated, and that is a large part of its attraction to me.

The current state of the building is of poignant disrepair; it is permanently rain-sodden, over grown with moss, ivy and grass in the gutters. Visiting the Mill is an elemental experience of cold, wind, damp and decay, and this is a quality I have sought to capture in my painting.
