Artist Statement We are all 'prisoners' of our own time - of the 'enlightenment' around us, and I for one am sure that with the attitudes I see around me - change doesn’t always mean progress. Without a respect for the past, the opportunity to build a future with the rich characteristics, details and layers of our cultural identity is being squandered. There are a thousand good uses which the mill building we’ve been working in could be put to... 'sustainable' re-uses of a building with 200 years of history. The developers plans which will see it demolished to make way for a carpark is short-sighted beyond belief. My print, entitled After Image, embodies aspects of the impression left behind when you’ve looked at something bright and then closed your eyes. It reflects a comment that made an impression on me... Professionally I'm involved in research on cutting edge multimedia technologies, but I have much to learn from the techniques and skills of those who worked in the Linenhall Works 100 years ago... before we end up with another characterless shopping centre, isn't it time we went ‘back to the drawing board’...? |
